Hard water scale without the salt: common questions

Can I deal with white crust and scale without a salt softener?

Yes. That white crust is limescale from hard water. A salt-free conditioner reduces scale buildup on faucets, shower heads, fixtures and inside your water heater, with no salt, no brine and no added sodium. The minerals stay in the water, so it doesn’t soften water.

Will a salt-free conditioner help protect my water heater?

It helps. Scale inside a tank heater is often what causes popping and lost efficiency. By reducing scale buildup, a conditioner helps protect your water heater, dishwasher and washing machine.

Do I have to haul salt bags with a salt-free system?

No. There’s no salt, no brine tank and nothing to program. It also sends no salt discharge down the drain.

Is a salt-free conditioner allowed where salt softeners aren’t?

Yes. In Lathrop west of I-5, including River Islands, city code restricts new salt-based softeners [Lathrop Municipal Code Ch. 13.05], and a salt-free conditioner is the usual way homes there reduce scale buildup.

Imagine never lugging another 40-pound bag of salt, never refilling a brine tank, and never wondering what's going down your drain, while your pipes, faucets, shower glass and water heater get far less hard water scale buildup. That's a salt-free water conditioner, also called a saltless system. It works around the clock with no salt, no brine and no added sodium, and it keeps the natural calcium and magnesium in your water. It's our most popular choice for homeowners who want hard water protection without the hassle. Liquid Solutions Inc installs and services saltless systems across Manteca, Stockton, Lathrop, River Islands, Patterson, Hughson, Ripon, Turlock and Modesto. We're a licensed C55 water conditioning contractor (C55 is California's water conditioning contractor license; CSLB #811243) with 30+ years of experience, family-owned since 1996.

How a salt-free water conditioner works

Not all saltless systems are built the same. Many use cheaper, less effective media. Our AquaClean Green 6-stage system uses ScaleStop Aqua Guard, a TAC (template-assisted crystallization) media rated 99.6% effective at reducing scale. TAC is backed by independent research: in a WateReuse Research Foundation study comparing salt-free alternatives, published by the California State Water Resources Control Board, "the template-assisted crystallization device was the most efficient device for reducing scale, with greater than 88% scale reduction." (source) As water flows through the tank, it turns dissolved hardness minerals into tiny, stable crystals that mostly stay suspended in the water, so far less scale builds up on your pipes, fixtures, dishwasher, washing machine and water heater. The healthy minerals stay in, and scale buildup slows way down. The system also has KDF, coconut-shell carbon and catalytic carbon stages built in to reduce chlorine and chloramine taste and odor at every tap, plus zeolite and a clarifier base for clean, clear water with strong flow.

Why homeowners love going saltless

  • Say goodbye to salt bags. No heavy bags to buy, haul or store, and no brine tank to babysit.
  • Protects what you've invested in. Dramatically reduces scale buildup in your water heater, pipes, fixtures, dishwasher and washing machine, so they can work better and last longer.
  • Better-tasting water at every tap. Our saltless installs include carbon filtration that reduces chlorine taste and odor throughout the house, so you get cleaner-tasting water for showers, cooking and drinking.
  • Keeps the good minerals. Calcium and magnesium stay in your water, and many people love the natural taste and feel.
  • No added sodium. A great fit for anyone watching their sodium.
  • Eco-friendly. No salty brine goes down your drain or into local wastewater.
  • Set it and forget it. No salt to refill and no regeneration schedule, just periodic media and filter changes that we track for you. Our standard system uses a small amount of electricity to backwash and fluff the media so it lasts longer, and no-electricity options are available.
  • Approved where salt isn't. In River Islands and other parts of Lathrop west of I-5, Lathrop Municipal Code Chapter 13.05 restricts new salt-based softeners, and a backwashing saltless system is the only whole-home option we install there. River Islands water

Salt-free conditioner vs salt water softener: an honest comparison

Salt-free (saltless)Traditional water softener
Reduces scale buildupYes, dramaticallyYes, removes the minerals that cause it
Removes hardness mineralsNo (conditions them)Yes
"Slippery" soft-water feelNoYes
Salt bags / brine tankNoneYes
Adds sodiumNoA small amount
Water down the drainOnly a small backwash on backwashing modelsYes, during regeneration
Best fitYou want big scale reduction with no saltYou want truly soft water

Both are great choices, and we install both. If you want the slippery soft-water feel and the richest soap lather, a traditional water softener delivers it. If you want major scale reduction, better-tasting water and zero salt to deal with, saltless is hard to beat. This table is a general comparison. The best choice depends on your water, so we highly recommend a professional water test and recommendation from our team, and our free water test tells us how hard your water is so the recommendation is based on your numbers.

Hard water across the corridor

Hardness varies a lot in our area. Patterson city water is very hard. Stockton's district data shows a wide range. Manteca, Ripon, Turlock and Modesto commonly see scale and spotting. Very hard water and well water can affect which system works best, which is one more reason we test before recommending anything. Patterson Stockton Manteca Lathrop

Filtration built in, plus drinking water

Our AquaClean Green saltless system already filters chlorine and chloramine (chlorine combined with ammonia) through its built-in carbon stages, so you don't need a separate chlorine filter. For the best drinking and cooking water, add an under-sink reverse osmosis (RO) system.

Maintenance

Saltless systems need very little upkeep. The filtration and conditioning media are replaced on a schedule based on your water use and test results, and we track that for you. There's no salt, no regeneration settings, and no brine tank to clean.

What a salt-free conditioner saves you

A salt-free conditioner is about protection and convenience:

  • It helps reduce scale buildup, which helps protect your water heater, fixtures and appliances.
  • No salt to buy or carry, and no brine discharge.
  • No electricity and nothing to program.
  • Low upkeep, with service from the same local team that installed it.

A salt-free conditioner doesn’t soften water the way a softener does, so you may still see some spotting. If you want the full soft-water feel, ask about a water softener.

Salt-free water conditioner FAQs

What warranty comes with a saltless system?

Our systems come with a lifetime limited tank warranty. Service plans add extended labor warranties.

How long does a saltless system last?

Softening and conditioning systems typically last 15–20 years with regular service.

Will you need to change my plumbing?

We find a spot where we can tap into your main water line so the whole home gets conditioned water. We plan the location with you during the free water test.

Is there such a thing as a "salt-free water softener"?

Not really. Only a system that removes hardness minerals is a true water softener, and that uses salt or potassium. A salt-free system is a water conditioner: it keeps the minerals but conditions them so far less of it builds up as scale. You'll see "salt-free water softener" used online, but the accurate name is salt-free water conditioner.

Salt-free conditioner or salt water softener: which is better?

Both are great. A salt softener gives truly soft water. Salt-free greatly reduces scale with no salt, no brine and no added sodium, plus carbon-filtered water at every tap. Our free test helps you decide.

Does a salt-free water conditioner work on well water?

Often, but iron, manganese, sulfur, or sediment in well water usually needs to be treated first. We test your well and recommend the right setup.

Will saltless remove the spots on my shower glass?

It greatly reduces new scale buildup. Because the minerals stay in the water, you may still see some water spots that wipe off easily.

Does a saltless system remove chlorine?

Our saltless installs include carbon filtration that reduces chlorine taste and odor.

Can I switch from a salt softener to saltless?

Yes. If you'd like to go salt-free, we can replace an existing water softener with a state-of-the-art saltless system.
