Water tastes or smells like a pool in Mountain House? Thatâs chloramine, and a catalytic carbon filter is built for it.
Mountain House is different from most of the towns we serve. Its water doesnât come from local wells; the Mountain House CSDâs 2024 report lists surface water from the California Aqueduct as its source. That makes it softer than most Valley water: hardness measured 65.4 ppm (parts per million).
The bigger story is disinfection. Mountain House uses chloramine (chlorine combined with ammonia), chlorine bonded with ammonia, at an average of 2.80 mg/L in the 2024 report. Chloramine lasts longer in the pipes than chlorine, but itâs harder to filter: a basic carbon cartridge doesnât remove much of it. We size catalytic carbon for chloramine and pair it with RO for drinking water.
