Black stains in the toilet or sink in Hilmar? That’s often manganese, which the district’s latest report flags.

Hilmar is dairy country, and its water reflects that. In town, the Hilmar County Water District (HCWD) serves homes from two active wells, Jake #6 and Woody #7, with Cox #4 on standby. The district’s source assessment says its wells are most vulnerable to agricultural drainage, grazing, animal operations and septic systems. Outside the district, many homes and ranches run on private wells.

HCWD’s 2024 report shows why testing matters here. Nitrate averaged 9.45 ppm (parts per million) with readings up to 34.3 ppm, and the report lists a nitrate MCL (maximum contaminant level, the legal limit for public drinking water) violation; the district responded with blending and well inspection and maintenance. Manganese averaged 42 µg/L, close to the 50 µg/L secondary (taste and staining) standard. Hardness is moderate at about 99.5 ppm. On private wells, iron staining and rotten-egg sulfur smell are the complaints we hear most.

How we help Hilmar homes

For nitrate, whole-house anion exchange is our primary and most effective method; under-sink RO can also reduce nitrate in drinking water, though less effectively. For the whole house, manganese, iron and sulfur filters handle staining and odor on wells, with a softener or salt-free conditioner for scale.

Hilmar water FAQs

Is there nitrate in Hilmar’s water?

HCWD’s 2024 report shows nitrate averaging 9.45 ppm with a high of 34.3 ppm and lists a nitrate MCL violation. Whole-house anion exchange is our primary method for nitrate; under-sink reverse osmosis can also reduce it in drinking water, though less effectively. Private wells should be tested regularly.

Why do my Hilmar fixtures stain black or orange?

Black or brown stains usually point to manganese; orange points to iron. HCWD reports manganese near the secondary standard, and private wells often carry both. A test tells us which filter you need.
