White spots on glasses and crust on the shower head in Ripon? That’s hard water from the city’s deep wells.
All of Ripon’s drinking water comes from five city wells, one west of Highway 99 and four east of it, drawing from aquifers 125 to 500 feet down. The water carries the calcium and magnesium you see as spots on glassware. The city’s 2025 report puts average hardness at 130 ppm (parts per million), with some samples as high as 230 ppm. Dissolved minerals (TDS (total dissolved solids, the minerals and salts dissolved in water)) averaged 368 ppm and reached 790 ppm in some samples, which you can taste in coffee and see as film in kettles.
In January 2026, the City notified customers that Well 19, at Mistlin Sports Park, measured 10.7 ppb of hexavalent chromium, just over the state’s 10 ppb limit. The City says a system Ripon’s size isn’t in violation until after October 1, 2027, and it’s working on a compliance plan for that well.
Just moved from the Bay Area and your skin feels drier? Many people notice it. San Francisco’s water averaged 62 ppm of hardness in 2025, and EBMUD describes its water as soft to moderately hard [SFPUC 2025 Annual Water Quality Report] [EBMUD water quality FAQs]. Valley tap water is often harder, and the chlorine or chloramine (chlorine combined with ammonia) used to disinfect city water can dry out skin and hair. A water softener takes care of the hardness, and whole-house carbon filtration reduces chlorine at every tap.

How we help Ripon homes
A softener or salt-free conditioner for scale, a whole house water filter for chlorine, and under-sink RO if you want to reduce nitrate and dissolved minerals in drinking water. RO can reduce chromium-6, too. According to the California State Water Board, “RO is a mature and viable technology for hexavalent chromium removal.” [California State Water Board, Hexavalent Chromium MCL Initial Statement of Reasons] Ask us about a free water test. If nitrate is the main concern, whole-house anion exchange is our primary method. Ripon is a short drive up Highway 99 from our shop.

Ripon water FAQs
Is Ripon water hard?
Moderately. Ripon’s 2025 report shows average hardness of 130 ppm, ranging from 84 to 230 ppm depending on the well.
Should I worry about chromium at Ripon’s Well 19?
The City reported 10.7 ppb at Well 19, just over the 10 ppb limit, and is working on a compliance plan. If you want an extra layer anyway, RO can reduce chromium-6; according to the California State Water Board, RO is a mature and viable technology for hexavalent chromium removal. Ask us about a free water test.
What does RO do for Ripon water?
RO reduces dissolved minerals (Ripon’s TDS reached 790 ppm in some samples) and some nitrate at the kitchen tap, and RO can reduce chromium-6 (per the California State Water Board), so drinking water and ice taste cleaner. For nitrate, whole-house anion exchange is our primary method.
How much does a water softener cost in Ripon?
It depends on your home’s size and what your water test shows. We start with a free in-home water test in Ripon, then give you a written, no-pressure estimate for the softener or RO system your water calls for. Does my Ripon water come from Well 19?
The city rotates its five wells, so water at any tap can be a mix. If chromium-6 at Well 19 concerns you, under-sink RO can reduce chromium-6 in drinking water. Ask us about a free water test.
