Nitrate is one of the most common concerns for private wells in the Central Valley. You can't see, smell, or taste it, so testing is the only way to know. Liquid Solutions Inc tests for nitrate and installs nitrate removal and reverse osmosis systems for homes in Manteca, Stockton, Patterson, Lathrop, Hughson, Ripon, Turlock and Modesto. We're a licensed California C55 water conditioning contractor (C55 is California's water conditioning contractor license; CSLB #811243) with 30+ years of experience, family-owned since 1996.

Why nitrate matters

The U.S. EPA's drinking water limit for nitrate, called the MCL (maximum contaminant level, the highest amount legally allowed in public drinking water), is 10 milligrams per liter (mg/L), measured as nitrogen. In EPA's words:

"Infants below the age of six months who drink water containing nitrate in excess of the MCL could become seriously ill and, if untreated, may die. Symptoms include shortness of breath and blue-baby syndrome."

Source: U.S. EPA, National Primary Drinking Water Regulations, https://www.epa.gov/ground-water-and-drinking-water/national-primary-drinking-water-regulations

EPA lists the sources of nitrate in drinking water as "Runoff from fertilizer use; leaking from septic tanks, sewage; erosion of natural deposits." All of these are common around farm-country wells.

Pitcher and fridge filters aren't enough

Standard carbon, pitcher, and refrigerator filters are not designed to remove nitrate. Nitrate needs a treatment method built for it. Our primary and most effective method is whole-house anion exchange; reverse osmosis at the kitchen sink can also reduce nitrate, though less effectively, and is typically a drinking-water option.

Testing your well

Our free in-home water test is the starting point, and we offer specialized well testing on site and through state-certified labs for nitrate and other well contaminants. We explain the results and what they mean. Well water testing

Treatment options

  • Whole-house anion exchange nitrate removal: our primary and most effective method, sized from your test, treating every tap
  • Under-sink reverse osmosis (RO) system: can also reduce nitrate, though less effectively than anion exchange; typically an under-sink option for drinking and cooking water

After installation, we test again to confirm your results.

Nitrate FAQs

Is nitrate in well water dangerous?

At high levels, yes, especially for infants. The U.S. EPA limit is 10 mg/L (as nitrogen). EPA: "Infants below the age of six months who drink water containing nitrate in excess of the MCL could become seriously ill and, if untreated, may die."

How do I know if my well has nitrate?

Only testing tells you. Ask about our specialized well testing on site and through state-certified labs.

Does boiling water remove nitrate?

No. Boiling doesn't remove nitrate. As water evaporates, the nitrate stays behind and becomes more concentrated. Boiling doesn't remove most other dissolved contaminants either.

Does reverse osmosis remove nitrate?

RO can reduce nitrate, though less effectively than whole-house anion exchange, which is our primary method. RO is typically an under-sink option for drinking and cooking water. We confirm with testing after installation.
