Spotty glasses or crust on faucets in Ceres? That’s hard water, and how hard depends on the blend.
Ceres sits right on Modesto’s southern edge, but its water story is its own. For decades the City ran on groundwater wells. In 2023 it began blending in treated Tuolumne River water from the Stanislaus Regional Water Authority. That blend explains the city’s unusually wide hardness range in the 2025 report: an average of just 84 mg/L, but individual samples from 23 up to 490 mg/L. Two houses a mile apart can see very different scale.
Ceres is also dealing with 1,2,3-TCP (trichloropropane, a contaminant linked to past farm fumigant use), a contaminant linked to soil fumigants used on Valley farmland decades ago. The 2025 report says the City’s average TCP level was 0.021 µg/L, above the 0.005 µg/L limit, and that the City is installing TCP treatment at more well sites. Many Ceres families add under-sink RO in the meantime.

Ceres water FAQs
Is there TCP in Ceres water?
The City’s 2025 report shows an average of 0.021 µg/L, above the 0.005 µg/L limit, and says more well-site treatment is being installed. RO with carbon is a common drinking-water layer in the meantime.
Why does my Ceres water seem softer some months?
Since 2023 Ceres blends soft Tuolumne River water with harder well water. The 2025 report shows hardness from 23 to 490 mg/L, so it varies by location and season.
