Signs of iron in your water
- Orange, red, or brown stains on fixtures and laundry
- Metallic taste in water, coffee, or tea
- Water that's clear from the tap but turns rusty after sitting
- Clogged aerators, showerheads, and irrigation emitters
These are general signs, not a diagnosis. Other issues can cause similar symptoms, so we highly recommend a professional water test from our team before choosing a system. Call (209) 645-1151 to schedule.
How our iron filter works
Our iron filters use oxidation: iron dissolved in the water is converted into particles the filter media can catch, and the system backwashes them away on a schedule. We size the system from your well test results, because iron level, pH, and other minerals like manganese and sulfur all affect the right setup.
Test first
Iron rarely shows up alone in well water. Our free in-home water test and specialized well testing (on site and through state-certified labs) help us find what needs treating. Well water testing
After iron: softener, RO and more
Once the iron is handled, many well homes add a water softener or salt-free water conditioner for hardness, and an under-sink reverse osmosis (RO) system for drinking water. See also manganese and rotten egg smell.
On a private well? Iron, manganese, sulfur and nitrate often show up together. See well water treatment for the full picture, from arsenic and low pH to sediment and UV.
Iron filter FAQs
Why does my well water leave orange stains?
That's usually dissolved iron oxidizing when it meets air. An iron filter removes it before it reaches your fixtures.
Will a water softener remove iron?
A softener can handle small amounts of some iron, but it isn't designed for it, and iron can foul the resin. A dedicated iron filter is the reliable fix.
Is iron in well water dangerous?
Iron is mainly a staining, taste, and plumbing problem. We test for other contaminants at the same time.
