Signs of manganese

  • Black or brown stains on porcelain, glass, and laundry
  • Black specks or a dark tint in water
  • A bitter or metallic taste
  • Buildup in water heaters and fixtures

These are general signs, not a diagnosis. Other issues can cause similar symptoms, so we highly recommend a professional water test from our team before choosing a system. Call (209) 645-1151 to schedule.

How our manganese filter works

Like iron, manganese is removed by oxidation and filtration: the dissolved manganese is converted to particles the media can trap, then backwashed away. Manganese often shows up together with iron, so we size one system for both based on your well test.

Test first

Our free in-home water test and specialized well testing (on site and through state-certified labs) tell us how much manganese and iron you have, which determines the right setup. Well water testing

Manganese FAQs

Why does my well water leave black stains?

Black or dark brown staining is a common sign of manganese. A manganese filter removes it before it reaches your fixtures.

Will a water softener remove manganese?

Not reliably. A dedicated oxidation filter is the right fix, and it protects your softener too.

Do iron and manganese need separate filters?

Often one properly sized system handles both. Your test results decide.
