Signs you have hard water

What’s the white crust on my faucets and shower head?

That’s limescale, the calcium and magnesium left behind when hard water dries or heats up. It builds up on faucets, shower heads, kettles and inside your water heater. A softener removes the minerals that cause it, so the crust stops coming back.

Why is my shower head clogged or losing pressure?

Scale builds up inside the little holes of a shower head and in faucet screens until the water barely sprays. Hard-water showerheads lost 75% of their flow in under 18 months in one industry study [WQRF hardness research]. Softened water keeps them clear.

Why are there white spots on my dishes and glasses?

Those spots are minerals left behind as the water dries. A softener nearly eliminates water spotting on dishes, glasses and shower glass.

Why does my skin feel dry and itchy after a shower?

Hard water can leave soap residue on your skin and hair, and many people notice their skin feels drier. The chlorine used to disinfect city water can dry out skin and hair too. A softener helps soap rinse clean, and a whole-house carbon filter reduces chlorine.

Just moved from the Bay Area and your skin feels drier?

Many people do. San Francisco’s water averaged 62 ppm (parts per million) of hardness in 2025, and EBMUD describes its water as soft to moderately hard [SFPUC 2025 Annual Water Quality Report] [EBMUD water quality FAQs]. Valley tap water is often harder, and the chlorine or chloramine (chlorine combined with ammonia) used to disinfect city water can dry out skin and hair too. A softener handles the hardness; whole-house carbon filtration handles the chlorine.

Why won’t my soap lather, and why is there soap scum?

Hardness minerals react with soap, so it won’t lather and leaves a film on tubs, shower doors and skin. With softened water, soap and detergent go further: laundry tests used half the detergent [WQRF laundry study].

Why does my water heater make popping noises or wear out early?

Scale settles in the bottom of the tank, and water trapped under it pops as it heats. Hard water cut water heater efficiency by up to 48% in testing, while heaters on softened water kept their factory efficiency [WQRF hardness research].

Hard water is the most common water problem in the Central Valley, and it’s the one families notice first: a white crust around the faucet, cloudy glasses out of the dishwasher, soap scum that comes back the day after you clean, and towels that feel stiff. Hard water is caused by dissolved calcium and magnesium. It isn’t considered a health concern, but it is expensive, because the same minerals you see on the faucet are building up inside your water heater, your pipes and every appliance that uses water.

Liquid Solutions Inc has been fixing hard water across Manteca, Lathrop, Stockton, Patterson, Hughson, Turlock and Modesto since 1996. We test first, size a water softener to your home and your water, and test again after install so you can see the difference for yourself.

Signs of hard water you’ll notice

  • White or chalky crust on faucets, showerheads and glass shower doors
  • Spots and film on glasses and dishes, even after the dishwasher
  • Soap and shampoo that don’t lather well, and soap scum on tubs and tile
  • Stiff, dingy laundry and dry-feeling skin and hair
  • Scale in kettles and coffee makers, and a water heater that rumbles or pops

Penn State Extension lists grayish-white film on sinks, tubs and dishes, reduced suds in laundry, scale in teapots and frequent failure of water heater elements as classic hardness symptoms, most likely above about 120 mg/L [Penn State Extension: Common drinking water problems and solutions].

These are general signs, not a diagnosis. Other issues can cause similar symptoms, so we highly recommend a professional water test before choosing a system.

How hard is Central Valley water?

The U.S. Geological Survey classifies water by hardness (as calcium carbonate): 0–60 mg/L is soft, 61–120 is moderately hard, 121–180 is hard, and more than 180 is very hard [USGS Water Science School: Hardness of water]. Many corridor homes land in the hard to very hard range:

Private wells around Hughson, Turlock and the rural edges of Modesto vary from one well to the next, which is why we test at your tap instead of guessing from a map.

How we treat hard water: a softener, set up right

A water softener is the fix for hardness. It exchanges the calcium and magnesium that cause scale, so the water reaching your water heater, fixtures and appliances stops leaving mineral behind. We size it to your hardness, your household and your water use, and set the regeneration so you’re not wasting salt or water. Softener salt is available from us on request.

A softener only treats hardness. If your test also shows iron, sulfur, manganese, sediment, low pH or bacteria, those need their own systems first. Treating them ahead of the softener protects the softener and helps it last longer. That’s why we test before we recommend anything. See iron & manganese, rotten egg smell, sediment and low pH.

What hard water is costing you, and what a softener saves

Scale doesn’t just look bad. In a 2009 study commissioned by the Water Quality Research Foundation and conducted by the Battelle Memorial Institute, water heaters on softened water kept their original factory efficiency rating for as long as 15 years, while running hard water through the units cut efficiency by up to 48 percent. Some tankless water heaters on hard water failed after just 1.6 years, showerheads on hard water lost 75 percent of their flow rate in less than 18 months, and faucet strainers clogged within 19 days [Water Quality Research Foundation: Water hardness (2009 Battelle study)]. Dishwashers and washing machines run for 30 days on softened water were nearly free of scale, while the hard-water units needed scale removal to work well [Water Quality Research Foundation: Water hardness (2009 Battelle study)].

Soap goes further, too. In a WQRF-funded laundry study, softened water let testers cut detergent by 50% and wash at 60°F instead of 100°F with the same or better stain removal [WQRF laundry detergent study, executive summary], and dishwashing tests found detergent savings of up to 70% [WQRF softened water benefits findings (dishwashing)].

What that means for your home:

  • Protected appliances. Less scale in the water heater, dishwasher and washer, and fewer early replacements and repairs.
  • Less soap, detergent and cleaning. Soft water lathers, rinses clean and cuts down on scrubbing.
  • Plumbing and fixtures that keep flowing. Fewer clogged aerators and showerheads.
  • Peace of mind. Your water heater and appliances are protected every day, without you thinking about it.

Your actual savings depend on your hardness, your water heater and how much hot water your family uses. We’ll talk it through with your test results in hand.

Hard water near you

We install and service softeners up and down the corridor: Manteca · Lathrop · Stockton · Patterson · Hughson · Turlock · Modesto. Every city’s water is different, and each city page shows what that city’s latest water report says.

Hard water and your hair

Hard water leaves calcium and magnesium on hair the same way it leaves white crust on a faucet. The most common things people tell us: hair that feels frizzy, dull or straw-like, shampoo that won’t lather, and color that seems to fade faster. Softened water lets shampoo and conditioner lather and rinse clean, so many people find their hair feels softer and shinier after the switch.

Some people notice less hair in the shower drain after moving to soft water. We can’t promise that, and hard water isn’t a proven cause of hair loss. If you’re losing hair, talk with your doctor. What a softener does do is take the mineral film out of the picture.

Just moved from the Bay Area? San Francisco’s water is soft (it averaged 62 ppm in 2025 [SFPUC 2025 Annual Water Quality Report]), and Valley water is often two to six times harder, so the change can be noticeable in your first few weeks.

Hard Water: questions we hear

What setting does my softener need?

It depends on your hardness and household size. We measure hardness at your tap during the free water test and set the softener to match, so it isn’t wasting salt or water.

Is hard water bad for my health?

Hard water is not considered a health concern. The costs show up in scale, worn-out appliances, extra soap and cleaning time.

Do you sell softener salt?

Yes, salt is available on request. Ask when you schedule service or call (209) 523-5921.

Why can’t a softener fix my iron or rotten egg smell too?

A softener is built to treat hardness. Iron, sulfur, manganese, sediment, low pH and bacteria each need their own treatment ahead of the softener, which protects the softener and helps it last longer.

Can I finance a water softener?
