What you’ll notice
- No more orange rust stainsin toilets, tubs and sinks
- Cleaner laundrywhites that stay white
- Clear-looking waterno orange or brown tint
- Less metallic tastewater you want to drink
- Protects your softeneriron fouls softener resin
Iron and manganese are two of the most destructive well water problems we see. They stain everything they touch: orange, red and brown from iron, black and gray from manganese. Sinks, tubs, toilets, laundry, driveways and the side of the house where the sprinklers hit can all change color. Water may come out of the tap clear and turn rusty after it sits.
Liquid Solutions Inc installs iron filters for well water and manganese filters for homes around Stockton, Lathrop, Manteca, Hughson, Turlock, Patterson and Modesto. We test first, then size a system that treats iron and manganese before they reach your plumbing.

Signs of iron and manganese
- Water that’s clear at first, then leaves brown, orange or reddish stains or sediment (iron)
- Black specks or black stains, or tub and toilet water that looks gray or black (manganese)
- Metallic-tasting water [Penn State Extension: Common drinking water problems and solutions]
- Slimy orange, rusty or gray deposits in the toilet tank, sometimes with a swampy or musty smell (iron bacteria) [Minnesota Dept. of Health: Iron bacteria in well water]
These are general signs, not a diagnosis. We highly recommend a professional water test before choosing a system.
Where it comes from, and the limits
Iron and manganese dissolve naturally from soil and rock into groundwater. In the USGS study of the Modesto, Turlock and Merced groundwater subbasins, iron and manganese were present at high concentrations in about 5% of the primary aquifers [USGS Fact Sheet 2010-3001: Groundwater quality, Central Eastside San Joaquin Valley]. Farther north, in the Eastern San Joaquin, Cosumnes and Tracy study areas, manganese was present at high or moderate concentrations in about 34% of the primary aquifers, often tied to low-oxygen groundwater that releases the metals from minerals [USGS Fact Sheet 2010-3079: Groundwater quality, Northern San Joaquin Valley].
California’s secondary (aesthetic) standards are 0.3 mg/L for iron and 0.05 mg/L for manganese [California secondary drinking water standards (Title 22)]. In California, secondary standards are enforceable for community water systems [State Water Board: Manganese in drinking water]. Private wells aren’t regulated, so testing is up to the owner.
What iron and manganese are costing you
Penn State Extension ties iron above 0.3 mg/L to brown, orange or reddish stains and sediment, and manganese above 0.05 mg/L to black specks and black stains [Penn State Extension: Common drinking water problems and solutions]. On fixtures, laundry and concrete, those stains come back as long as the water does.
Iron bacteria make it worse. The Minnesota Department of Health explains that they combine iron or manganese with oxygen to form rusty deposits and a slimy material that sticks to well pipes, pumps and plumbing fixtures, and they can affect how much water the well produces and cause clogging [Minnesota Dept. of Health: Iron bacteria in well water]. The Pennsylvania Department of Health notes that iron, sulfur and slime bacteria are not harmful to health but can cause significant damage to plumbing and water systems [Pennsylvania Dept. of Health: Sulfur, iron and slime bacteria in water]. That buildup ends up in aerators, showerheads, water heaters and appliances.
They’re hard on softeners, too. Penn State Extension warns that oxidized forms of iron and manganese will foul softener resin [Penn State Extension: Iron and manganese in private water systems]. Treating iron and manganese first protects your softener investment.
The real costs: replaced fixtures, ruined laundry, stained concrete and siding, clogged aerators and showerheads, extra wear on the water heater and appliances, and a softener that wears out early.

How we treat it
- Mild cases: carbon filtration.
- Stronger cases: a greensand system recharged with potassium permanganate, which oxidizes the iron and manganese so they can be filtered out.
If your water also needs a water softener, the iron and manganese treatment goes first. If there’s sulfur smell or low pH, we plan those too, so every system protects the next. See rotten egg smell and low pH.
What treatment saves you
- Clean fixtures, laundry and concrete instead of a cabinet full of stain removers.
- Protected plumbing and appliances, with less buildup in aerators, showerheads, the water heater and washer.
- A softener that lasts, because it isn’t fighting iron and manganese.
- Water that tastes clean, and peace of mind every time you turn on the tap.
Getting the treatment order right
Iron and manganese problems often come with sulfur, low pH or sediment. The order matters: sediment and pH first when needed, then iron, manganese and sulfur, then a softener if your hardness calls for it. Each step protects the next, so your softener resin stays clean and every system lasts longer. We lay it out on your estimate so you can see why each piece is there.
Iron and manganese near you
We see iron and manganese most often on private wells in the rural areas around the corridor: Manteca · Lathrop · Stockton · Patterson · Hughson · Turlock · Modesto.

Iron & Manganese: questions we hear
Can a water softener remove iron?
A softener can handle low levels of dissolved iron, but oxidized iron and manganese foul the resin. For real iron problems we install a dedicated iron filter ahead of the softener to protect it.
What causes black stains in my toilet?
Black or gray stains are a classic sign of manganese. A water test confirms it and tells us how much treatment you need.
Will an iron filter remove the stains I already have?
No. It stops new stains from forming. Existing stains need to be cleaned once, and then they stay gone while the water is treated.
How is a greensand filter maintained?
Greensand is recharged with potassium permanganate. We set up the schedule for your water and can handle it with a service plan.
Is iron in well water a health problem?
California’s iron and manganese limits are secondary (aesthetic) standards. The bigger costs are stains, buildup and damage to plumbing and appliances. A test tells you your levels.
