Pure Water, Pure Life

Low pH (Acidic) Water: Stop Pinhole Leaks

Stop the blue-green stains in your sinks and tub, and protect your copper pipes from pinhole leaks. A neutralizing filter is inexpensive protection compared with repiping.

Corroded copper pipe fitting from acidic, low pH water

What you’ll notice

  • No more blue-green stainsin sinks, tubs and showers
  • Helps protect copper pipesfrom corrosion and pinhole leaks
  • Less metallic or bitter tasteat the kitchen tap
  • Fixtures & water heater last longergentler water throughout the house

Acidic water is quiet damage. It doesn’t smell like sulfur or stain like iron, but it slowly eats copper plumbing from the inside. The first signs are blue-green stains in sinks and tubs and a metallic taste in the first water of the morning. The expensive sign is a pinhole leak.

Liquid Solutions Inc installs acid neutralizing filters for well owners around Modesto, Hughson, Turlock, Patterson, Manteca, Lathrop and Stockton. We test your pH, size a calcite or Corosex neutralizer, and test again after install.

Corroded copper pipe fitting from acidic, low pH water

Signs of acidic water

Penn State Extension lists these symptoms of corrosive water [Penn State Extension: Common drinking water problems and solutions] [Penn State Extension: Corrosive water problems]:

  • Bluish-green stains in sinks and tubs
  • Metallic-tasting water, especially the first water in the morning
  • Pinhole leaks in pipes and corroded fixtures

These are general signs, not a diagnosis. A pH test confirms it.

What the standards say

The federal secondary (aesthetic) guideline for pH is 6.5 to 8.5, and California doesn’t set its own pH standard [State Water Board: MCLs, DLRs and PHGs, incl. secondary standards]. The by-products of corrosion are regulated: copper has an action level of 1.3 mg/L in both California and federal rules [State Water Board: California and federal MCLs (Sept 2024)]. Soft, acidic water (pH below 7.0) tends to be more corrosive [Penn State Extension: Corrosive water problems].

What acidic water is costing you

Corrosive water can dissolve copper from pipes and fixtures, leaving bluish-green stains and a metallic taste, and in some cases the corrosion is severe enough to cause leaks in the plumbing system [Penn State Extension: Corrosive water problems]. Penn State Extension specifically lists pinhole leaks in pipes and corroded fixtures as symptoms [Penn State Extension: Common drinking water problems and solutions]. Virginia Cooperative Extension adds that, left untreated, corrosive water will reduce the life expectancy of water-using appliances like water heaters, washing machines and dishwashers [Virginia Cooperative Extension: Corrosive household water].

Leaks get expensive fast. Angi’s national cost data puts repiping a house at $1,500 to $15,000, with most homeowners paying around $7,500 [Angi: Cost to repipe a house]. The Insurance Information Institute reports an average homeowners claim of $15,400 for water damage and freezing (2019–2023 average) [Insurance Information Institute: Average homeowners losses, 2019–2023]. Those are typical national figures, not quotes, and your costs will vary, but they show what’s at stake when a pinhole leak goes unnoticed inside a wall.

By comparison, a calcite or Corosex neutralizer is inexpensive protection. It treats the water where it enters the house, so every copper pipe, fitting, fixture and appliance downstream is protected.

How we treat it

We install calcite or Corosex neutralizing filters. As water flows through the tank, the media slowly dissolves and raises the pH, which reduces corrosivity [Penn State Extension: Corrosive water problems]. Calcite is the gentler choice for mildly acidic water; a calcite and Corosex blend is used when the pH is lower. The media is replenished as it dissolves, and we can handle that with a service plan.

Neutralizing does add some hardness to the water [Penn State Extension: Corrosive water problems], so we’ll tell you up front if a water softener after the neutralizer makes sense. If iron, sulfur or bacteria are present too, those get their own treatment. See iron & manganese.

What treatment saves you

  • Fewer pinhole leaks, and less risk of water damage and whole-house repiping.
  • Protected copper plumbing, water heater and appliances.
  • No more blue-green stains on sinks and tubs.
  • Peace of mind that your plumbing isn’t slowly being eaten from the inside.

Older homes: a word about lead

Corrosive water can also dissolve lead from the solder that joins copper pipes. Penn State Extension notes that lead was common in plumbing solder until it was banned in 1991, so if your home was built before 1991 and has metal plumbing, some lead is likely present [Penn State Extension: Corrosive water problems]. If that’s your home, we recommend a lab test for lead and copper along with pH, so you know where you stand before and after treatment.

Where the neutralizer fits in your system

A neutralizer goes where the water enters the house, so every pipe downstream is protected. If your well also has sulfur, raising the pH first can help that treatment work better; the Connecticut Department of Public Health notes a calcite neutralizer may be needed ahead of a greensand filter when pH is below 6.7 [Connecticut Dept. of Public Health: Hydrogen sulfide in private wells]. If the neutralizer raises hardness enough to matter, a softener goes after it. We lay out the order on your estimate so you can see how each piece protects the next.

Low pH (Acidic Water): questions we hear

What causes blue-green stains in my sink?

Usually copper dissolving from your plumbing because the water is corrosive, often from low pH. A pH test confirms it.

Calcite or Corosex: what’s the difference?

Both raise pH. Calcite is gentler and fits mildly acidic water; a calcite and Corosex blend is used for lower pH. Your test results decide.

Will a neutralizer make my water hard?

It adds some hardness. If that matters for your home, we’ll talk about adding a water softener after the neutralizer.

Should I just repipe instead?

Repiping changes the pipes but not the water. Corrosive water still reaches your water heater, fixtures and other metal parts. Treating the water protects the whole system, and costs far less than a repipe.

How often does a neutralizer need service?

The media dissolves as it works and needs to be replenished. How often depends on your pH and water use; we set up a service schedule for you.
