White spots on fixtures in Lodi? The city says its groundwater is at the low end of hard. A saltless system reduces scale without adding salt to the sewer.
Lodi’s water story is a blend. In 2025 the city’s surface water treatment plant supplied about 47 percent of Lodi’s drinking water, and 25 of its 28 computer-controlled wells supplied the rest, rotated so the water you get is a mix. Nine of those wells have granular activated carbon filters for DBCP, an old soil fumigant.
Lodi is also one of the few cities that tells residents what kind of softener it prefers. Its 2025 report says: “if you use a water softener, we suggest you utilize one which is regenerated by the softener company. Self-regenerating units add salt to the wastewater, which can add significantly to the City’s wastewater treatment costs.” That’s why, in Lodi, we usually lead with a saltless system for scale and save the salt question for your free test.
What Lodi’s 2025 water report says
- Supply: surface water treatment plant (about 47% of 2025 supply) plus 25 of 28 city wells; nine wells have GAC filters for DBCP. [City of Lodi Annual Water Quality Report for 2025]
- Hardness: average 133 ppm (parts per million) (14–340 ppm). The city says its groundwater is “at the low end of the ‘hard’ water range and you may see white scale or spots on plumbing fixtures.” [City of Lodi Annual Water Quality Report for 2025]
- Arsenic averaged 3.8 ppb (ND–8.1 ppb; limit 10). Nitrate as N averaged 3.7 ppm (ND–9.2; limit 10). Total dissolved solids averaged 257 ppm (44–550). [City of Lodi Annual Water Quality Report for 2025]
- Chlorine residual averaged 0.74 ppm (0.4–1.2 ppm). Sodium averaged 21 ppm. [City of Lodi Annual Water Quality Report for 2025]
These are system-wide averages and ranges from the public reports linked above. Your home’s water can differ by street and source, so we test at your tap before recommending anything.

How we help Lodi homes
For scale, a saltless system reduces buildup on fixtures and water heaters with no salt going to the city’s wastewater. A whole house water filter handles chlorine taste, and under-sink RO reduces arsenic, nitrate and dissolved solids in drinking water. If you still want true soft water, we’ll talk through it honestly against the city’s guidance at your test.

Lodi water FAQs
Is Lodi water hard?
Moderately. Lodi’s 2025 report shows 133 ppm on average, ranging up to 340 ppm depending on which wells are running. The city itself says you may see white scale or spots on fixtures.
Can I use a water softener in Lodi?
Lodi doesn’t ban them, but its 2025 report suggests a softener “which is regenerated by the softener company,” because self-regenerating units add salt to the city’s wastewater. A saltless system avoids the issue entirely, and we’ll go over every option at your free test.
Does Lodi water have arsenic or nitrate?
Both are present at low levels, under the limits: arsenic averaged 3.8 ppb (limit 10) and nitrate as N averaged 3.7 ppm (limit 10) in 2025. Under-sink RO reduces both in drinking water.
