Chromium-6 in Your Water: Test, Then Treat

Chromium-6 has no taste, color or smell. City notices and well tests are how families find it. We test first, then size reverse osmosis for drinking and cooking water when it makes sense.

Periodic table tile for Chromium (Cr), atomic number 24, labeled Cr(VI) hexavalent chromium

Licensed · Bonded · Workers' comp · Liability · 30+ years · Family-owned since 1996 · CSLB #811243

Chromium-6 (hexavalent chromium) is a form of chromium that can show up in groundwater. You can’t see it, taste it or smell it, so a glass can look perfect and still raise questions once a city notice or a lab report lands on the kitchen table. That’s why we never guess: we test, we walk you through the numbers, and we recommend only what your water and your home call for.

Liquid Solutions Inc helps families in Patterson, Ripon, Stockton, Manteca, Lathrop, Hughson, Turlock and Modesto get clear answers about chromium-6. When treatment makes sense for drinking and cooking water, reverse osmosis is the usual next step — with NSF-certified components, local install, and the same team for service afterward.

Signs of chromium-6

There aren’t any you can notice at home. Chromium-6 has no taste, color or smell. The only “sign” is a lab result, a Consumer Confidence Report line, or a public notice from your water system. If your city has sent a chromium-6 notice, or a neighbor’s well tested high, it’s worth testing your own drinking water rather than guessing.

These notices are information, not a diagnosis of your kitchen tap. Levels can vary by well and by blend. A test at your home is how we know what you’re actually drinking.

The limit, and where it shows up locally

California’s drinking water limit (MCL (maximum contaminant level, the legal limit for public drinking water)) for hexavalent chromium is 10 parts per billion (ppb). Public systems report against that number; private wells aren’t regulated the same way, but 10 ppb is still the benchmark most families compare their lab results to. [State Water Board: California and federal MCLs]

Local picture (from city reports already cited on our site):

  • Patterson: the city’s 2025 report shows hexavalent chromium averaging 18 ppb (range about 4.9–39.7 ppb) against the 10 ppb limit. Patterson has an approved compliance plan and sends quarterly notices; under the state rule, a system Patterson’s size isn’t considered in violation until after October 1, 2027. [City of Patterson 2025 CCR] · [Patterson Chromium-6 page] · See Patterson water.
  • Ripon: in January 2026 the city notified customers that Well 19 measured 10.7 ppb, just over the 10 ppb limit, and is working on a compliance plan. [City of Ripon hexavalent chromium notice] · See Ripon water.
  • Elsewhere in the corridor: some systems report chromium-6 well under the limit (for example Newman’s 2025 average was low, under 10 ppb). Stockton providers also report chromium-6 at low levels. The point isn’t panic — it’s knowing your number.

Private wells can pick up naturally occurring chromium-6 too. If you’ve never lab-tested, or you’re on a well near areas with notices, ask us about a state-certified lab panel.

How we test for chromium-6

  1. Free in-home water test. We come to you and check the basics at your tap: hardness, precipitation, chlorine and soap testing, and more, depending on what you’re noticing.
  2. Lab test where it matters. For chromium-6 and other health-based limits, we arrange a state-certified lab test and walk you through the report clearly.
  3. A written, no-pressure estimate for only what your water calls for. Sometimes that’s nothing at all.
  4. Tested before, tested after. Once a system is in, we can arrange follow-up testing so you see the difference on paper. If results don’t match what we showed you, we adjust at no charge.

How we treat it

A standard water softener isn’t designed for chromium-6 — it’s built for hardness — but we have specialty media options, and reverse osmosis for drinking water.

For drinking and cooking water, reverse osmosis is the approach we use most often. RO can reduce chromium-6. According to the California State Water Board, “RO is a mature and viable technology for hexavalent chromium removal.” [California State Water Board, Hexavalent Chromium MCL Initial Statement of Reasons]

That’s the state’s statement about the technology. We don’t claim any particular home unit is certified specifically for chromium-6. We size NSF-certified RO for how your family actually uses water — usually under-sink with a dedicated faucet for drinking, coffee, ice and cooking. When results and household use call for more coverage, we’ll talk through whole-home options too. Various setups are available; your test decides which one fits.

Many Patterson and Ripon homes pair a softener (for very hard / hard water) with under-sink RO (for drinking water). We only recommend both when the numbers and your goals call for it.

What treatment gives you

  • Confidence in every glass you pour for coffee, cooking and kids’ cups.
  • Less bottled-water hauling once drinking water comes from your own faucet.
  • A clear plan tied to your lab results — not a one-size pitch.
  • Local service from a family-owned team that’s been in the Valley since 1996 (CSLB C55 (California’s water conditioning contractor license) #811243).
  • Financing through Enhancify when you want to move forward without waiting (OAC).

Chromium-6: questions we hear

How do I know if my water has chromium-6?

Only a lab test (or your utility’s published sample for city water) can tell you. We arrange state-certified lab testing and explain the results clearly. Ask about a free water test.

What is the chromium-6 limit in California?

The MCL for hexavalent chromium is 10 parts per billion (ppb). Compare your lab or CCR result to that number in the same units.

Does a water softener remove chromium-6?

A standard softener isn’t designed for chromium-6 — it’s built for hardness. We have specialty media options, and reverse osmosis for drinking water. Various options; your test decides.

Does reverse osmosis remove chromium-6?

RO can reduce chromium-6. The California State Water Board describes RO as a mature and viable technology for hexavalent chromium removal. We don’t claim our home units are certified specifically for chromium-6. We test, size the system, and can re-test after install.

Patterson / Ripon already have a compliance plan — do I still need RO?

Once city treatment is online and working, chromium-6 at the tap should drop. Many families still want RO for taste, sodium, dissolved minerals, and an extra layer at the kitchen sink. Your goals and your test decide.

Will you test again after installing?

Yes when you’re treating a health-related contaminant. Tested before, tested after is how we work.

Can I finance an RO system?

Yes. Financing is available through Enhancify, including promotional options on approved credit (OAC). Call Sales (209) 645-1151.
