What you’ll notice

  • No rotten egg smellin the shower or at the tap
  • Less tarnishon silverware and fixtures
  • Water you want to drinkno sulfur taste
  • Protects your softenerand other treatment equipment

A rotten egg smell from the tap is one of the most unpleasant water problems a family can live with. It’s usually hydrogen sulfide gas, and it’s often strongest when the water first comes on or when hot water is running, because heat drives the gas into the air. That’s why the shower can be the worst part [Connecticut Dept. of Public Health: Hydrogen sulfide in private wells]. It’s common on private wells, and it often shows up alongside iron, manganese or low pH.

Liquid Solutions Inc treats sulfur smell for well owners around Stockton, Manteca, Lathrop, Hughson, Turlock, Patterson and Modesto. We test to confirm what’s causing it, then size the right sulfur filter so your home smells like home again.

Signs of sulfur (hydrogen sulfide) in your water

  • A rotten egg, musty or “swampy” smell, often worse in hot water or first thing in the morning
  • Black or yellow stains on sinks, tubs and toilets
  • Tarnished silverware and darkened copper or brass
  • Coffee, tea and cooked food that look or taste off

If the smell is only in hot water, the cause may be a reaction with the anode rod in the water heater rather than the well. If it’s only at one sink, it may be the drain [Penn State Extension: Common drinking water problems and solutions]. We check for both during the test.

Where it comes from

Hydrogen sulfide is produced naturally by decomposing organic material and by sulfur-reducing bacteria that feed on naturally occurring sulfate in groundwater [Connecticut Dept. of Public Health: Hydrogen sulfide in private wells]. Most people can detect it at concentrations as low as 0.5 mg/L [Connecticut Dept. of Public Health: Hydrogen sulfide in private wells]. There is no federal drinking water standard for hydrogen sulfide [Connecticut Dept. of Public Health: Hydrogen sulfide in private wells]. It’s treated as a nuisance, but a costly one. Because the right treatment depends on how much is present, we measure it rather than guess.

What sulfur water is costing you

The Connecticut Department of Public Health says hydrogen sulfide is corrosive to metals such as iron, steel, copper and brass. It can tarnish silverware, discolor copper and brass utensils, and cause yellow or black stains on kitchen and bathroom fixtures. At 1–2 mg/L it gives water the rotten egg smell and makes it very corrosive to household plumbing, and high concentrations can foul the resin bed of a water softener [Connecticut Dept. of Public Health: Hydrogen sulfide in private wells]. Virginia Cooperative Extension adds that it can corrode exposed metal parts of appliances [Virginia Cooperative Extension: Sulfate and hydrogen sulfide in household water].

That adds up to real money: faucets and fixtures that wear out early, metal parts in appliances that corrode, a softener that loses capacity, and constant scrubbing of black stains. And it’s hard to relax in your own home when the shower smells like rotten eggs.

How we treat it

We size the system to your test results and your water flow. If iron, manganese or low pH are present too, we plan the whole treatment train so each piece protects the next. See iron & manganese and low pH.

What treatment saves you

  • A home that smells clean. No more holding your breath in the shower.
  • Protected plumbing, fixtures and appliances, with less corrosion of copper, brass and metal parts.
  • A softener that keeps working. Treating sulfur first helps protect the softener resin.
  • Better coffee, tea and cooking.
  • Less scrubbing of black and yellow stains, and silverware that stays bright.

Hot water only? Check the water heater first

When the smell shows up only in hot water, the usual suspect is the water heater, not the well. The Connecticut Department of Public Health explains that a reaction involving the magnesium anode rod in the water heater can cause it, and replacing it with an aluminum or zinc rod may resolve the issue; a licensed plumber or heating professional should make that call [Connecticut Dept. of Public Health: Hydrogen sulfide in private wells]. We’ll check cold and hot water separately during your test, so you only pay for a filter if your water actually needs one.

Sulfur rarely travels alone

On Central Valley wells, a sulfur smell often comes with iron, manganese or low pH. Treating one and ignoring the others usually means the problem comes back, or the next piece of equipment pays the price. We look at the whole picture, then set up the equipment in the right order: sediment and pH first when needed, then sulfur and iron, then a softener if your hardness calls for it. Every piece protects the next, which is how a system lasts.

What install day looks like

Most whole-house sulfur systems go in where the water enters the house, in the garage or outdoors near the pressure tank. Our own team does the install, walks you through how the system works and what maintenance looks like, and tests the water again once it’s running. No subcontractors, and no guessing about who to call later.

Rotten Egg Smell (Sulfur): questions we hear

Why does only my hot water smell like rotten eggs?

A reaction with the anode rod in the water heater can create hydrogen sulfide in hot water only. We check for that before recommending a filter, so you don’t pay for treatment you don’t need.

Is rotten egg smell in well water dangerous?

Water with dissolved hydrogen sulfide alone doesn’t cause disease, but in rare cases the smell can come from sewage contamination, so a bacteria test is smart if that’s possible. For health questions, talk with your doctor or county environmental health.

Will a carbon filter fix my sulfur smell?

For mild cases, yes. Stronger cases need a greensand system with potassium permanganate. Your test results tell us which one fits.

Can sulfur water damage my softener?

Yes. High levels of hydrogen sulfide can foul softener resin, so we treat it ahead of the softener to protect it.

Do you install sulfur filters outside?

Yes. Many well systems go outdoors near the pressure tank or in a garage. We plan the location with you during the estimate.
