PFOS in Lathrop’s water system
Lathrop’s 2025 report lists PFOS in the combined distribution system (blended groundwater and surface water) at 15 ppt on average, 13 to 17 ppt, from 2024 sampling. Untreated city-well water measured higher, an average of 147 ppt. [City of Lathrop 2025 Water Quality Report]
For context: California’s notification level for PFOS is 4 ppt and its response level is 40 ppt. [California State Water Board: PFAS] EPA’s federal limit is 4.0 ppt, and water systems must meet it starting in 2029. [U.S. EPA: PFAS National Primary Drinking Water Regulation]
What RO does for PFAS
RO reduces PFAS. According to the U.S. EPA, “Research shows that these types of membranes are typically more than 90 percent effective at removing a wide range of PFAS, including shorter chain PFAS.” [U.S. EPA: Reducing PFAS in Drinking Water with Treatment Technologies] That’s research on membranes in general; we don’t claim our unit is certified for PFAS. More on our PFAS page.
River Islands kitchens
We install under-sink RO all over River Islands, from Skye and Capri to The Tides and the Del Webb neighborhood. Pair it with a backwashing saltless system for the whole house and you’ve covered scale and drinking water without a salt softener. Searching for “reverse osmosis near me” in Lathrop? Arsenic and the rest
Lathrop’s plant removes arsenic from the well water; treated groundwater still averaged 6 ppb (1–9 ppb), under the 10 ppb limit. [City of Lathrop 2025 Water Quality Report] RO reduces arsenic, too. According to the U.S. EPA, “RO is an effective arsenic removal technology proven through several bench- and pilot-scale studies.” [U.S. EPA: Small Systems Compliance Technology List for the Arsenic Rule]

Lathrop questions
Can I have reverse osmosis in River Islands?
Yes. The River Islands rule is about salt-based whole-home softeners. Under-sink RO is fine, and it’s one of the most common things we install there.
Is Lathrop water safe to drink?
Lathrop publishes its results every year, and we link to the report on this page. PFOS in the distribution system is above California’s notification level but below its response level. Many families add RO for an extra layer; see Is my tap water safe?
