Brand-new shower glass already cloudy in Lathrop? That’s hard-water scale.
Why Lathrop water leaves scale
Lathrop’s water is a blend of city wells and SSJID surface water. The untreated well water measured 196 ppm (parts per million) of hardness, 164 to 240 ppm, while the SSJID water was about 31 ppm. [City of Lathrop 2025 Water Quality Report] When more well water is in the mix, you see more white crust on faucets and more haze on shower glass.
Why it shows up so fast in new homes
A lot of Lathrop is new construction: River Islands, Mossdale, Stanford Crossing. Glossy fixtures and frameless shower glass show scale sooner than older finishes. Homeowners moving from the Bay Area, where San Francisco’s water is soft, [SFPUC 2025 Annual Water Quality Report] [EBMUD water quality FAQs] notice it right away.
Your options depend on which side of I-5 you’re on
West of I-5, including all of River Islands, the only whole-home option is a backwashing saltless system. It reduces scale buildup without salt; it doesn’t soften. East of I-5, a salt softener is usually allowed and nearly eliminates spotting. Either way, RO takes care of drinking water.

Lathrop questions
How hard is Lathrop water?
The city wells measured 196 ppm (164–240 ppm) before treatment. Surface water is about 31 ppm, so your tap is a blend.
Will a saltless system stop all water spots?
No. It reduces scale buildup, but the minerals stay in the water, so light spots that wipe off easily can still appear.
