Check your water bill first
Stockton is served by more than one utility. The disinfectant at your tap depends on who sends the bill. [City of Stockton MUD 2024 Drinking Water Quality Report] [Cal Water Stockton District 2025 Water Quality Report]
- California Water Service (Cal Water) - Stockton District reports free chlorine in its 2025 water quality report (average 0.75 ppm (parts per million)). [Cal Water Stockton District 2025 Water Quality Report] A whole house carbon filter reduces that taste and smell.
- City of Stockton Municipal Utilities converted its residual disinfection from chlorine to chloramine (chlorine combined with ammonia) in 2015. [City of Stockton report on its chloramine conversion] Chloramine lasts longer in the pipes and needs catalytic carbon. A basic chlorine cartridge will not do as much.

Why chloramine needs a different filter
Chloramine (chlorine bonded with ammonia) is harder to filter than free chlorine. For City of Stockton water we size catalytic carbon for chloramine taste and odor.
We offer several options, including carbon filters and backwashing systems, and your free in-home test shows which fits your home. For City water, that includes catalytic carbon built for chloramine. Systems use NSF-certified components. Backwashing carbon tanks carry a lifetime limited tank warranty.
Cal Water customers
If you are on Cal Water Stockton, your 2025 report lists free chlorine, not chloramine. [Cal Water Stockton District 2025 Water Quality Report] A whole house carbon filter still helps with taste and smell. Hardness on Cal Water can still leave spots; ask about a softener or saltless conditioner after the filter.
Pair with drinking water
For coffee, cooking and kids cups, add reverse osmosis at the kitchen sink. Various options; your test decides.
