Why the right filter depends on your Stockton water provider
Stockton has two main water providers: California Water Service (Cal Water), which runs the Stockton District, and the City of Stockton Municipal Utilities Department, which serves north and south Stockton. [City of Stockton MUD 2024 Drinking Water Quality Report] Not sure which you have? Check the name on your water bill.
- Cal Water disinfects with chlorine. [Cal Water Stockton District 2025 Water Quality Report] A whole house carbon filter takes out that taste and smell, so showers don’t smell like a pool and tap water tastes clean.
- City of Stockton switched from chlorine to chloramine (chlorine combined with ammonia) in 2015. [City of Stockton report on its chloramine conversion] Chloramine lasts longer in the pipes and is harder to filter, so it takes catalytic carbon. A basic chlorine cartridge won’t do as much.
What the water reports say
- Cal Water, Stockton District (2025): free chlorine average 0.75 ppm (parts per million); hardness average 150 ppm (22–290). [Cal Water Stockton District 2025 Water Quality Report]
- City of Stockton MUD (2024): chloramine since 2015 [City of Stockton report on its chloramine conversion]; serves more than 180,000 people; city well hardness average 234 ppm; treated surface water 45–59 ppm. [City of Stockton MUD 2024 Drinking Water Quality Report]

Whole house filter options
We offer several options, including carbon filters and backwashing systems, and your free in-home test shows which fits your home. For City of Stockton water, that includes catalytic carbon built for chloramine.
Systems are built with NSF-certified components.
Pair it with what your water needs
Spots on glasses or crust on faucets too? Water from either provider can be hard enough to cause them. [Cal Water Stockton District 2025 Water Quality Report] [City of Stockton MUD 2024 Drinking Water Quality Report] A water softener after the filter nearly eliminates spotting and leaves skin and hair feeling softer, and a carbon filter ahead of the softener also helps protect the resin. Prefer no salt? A saltless conditioner reduces scale buildup without salt.
For drinking water, add an NSF-certified under-sink reverse osmosis system.

Stockton water filter questions
Will a regular carbon filter remove chloramine?
Not as well. City of Stockton water uses chloramine, which needs catalytic carbon sized for your flow. We test to confirm which disinfectant reaches your tap.
Do I need a filter on Cal Water?
If chlorine taste or smell bothers you, yes. Cal Water’s Stockton water averaged 0.75 ppm free chlorine in 2025. A whole house carbon filter reduces it at every tap.
Does a whole house filter remove arsenic or chromium-6?
It isn’t designed to. For drinking water, under-sink RO is the usual layer. According to the California State Water Board, RO is a mature and viable technology for hexavalent chromium removal.
Do you really come out to Stockton?
Yes. Stockton is one of our main service areas, and the same family-owned team tests, installs and services your system.
