Why Turlock water tastes more like chlorine lately
Turlock used to run on groundwater alone. In 2016, planning for the new river supply noted that Turlock didn’t yet add chlorine to its well water and would start before surface water arrived. [SRWA Treatment Performance Goals technical memo (2016)] Treated Tuolumne River water from the Stanislaus Regional Water Authority (SRWA) first reached the city in December 2023. [City of Turlock 2023 Water Quality Report] Today Turlock blends it with 15 active wells, [City of Turlock 2025 Water Quality Report] and the regional plant adds chlorine before pumping the water to Turlock. [Stanislaus Regional Water Authority: Regional Surface Water Supply Project] If you pay a City of Turlock water bill, this is your water.
- Turlock disinfects with chlorine. [City of Turlock 2025 Water Quality Report] That’s the pool smell in your shower and the off taste in your coffee.
- That makes it easy to filter. A whole house carbon filter takes out the chlorine taste and smell, so showers smell clean and every glass tastes better.
- Your tap can differ. The well and river blend changes through the year, so we test at your tap before recommending anything.

Pair it with what your water needs
- Drinking water: add an NSF-certified under-sink reverse osmosis system for crisp, clean-tasting drinking and cooking water and fewer bottled-water runs. Turlock’s report lists arsenic at low levels, [City of Turlock 2025 Water Quality Report] and RO reduces arsenic. It can also reduce nitrate in drinking water.
- Nitrate: some city wells run close to the nitrate limit, and the city says it’s monitoring closely. [City of Turlock 2025 Water Quality Report] For nitrate, whole-house anion exchange is our primary and most effective method. Families with a baby often ask about nitrate first, since nitrate guidance focuses on infants.
- Hardness: Turlock’s water is moderately hard. [City of Turlock 2025 Water Quality Report] If spots on glasses or dry skin bother you, a water softener after the filter nearly eliminates spotting and leaves skin and hair feeling softer, and a carbon filter ahead of the softener also helps protect the resin. Prefer no salt? A saltless conditioner reduces scale buildup without salt.

From a Turlock customer
“Our service tech went to great lengths to explain best practices, system processes and our current water ratings. We've had our conditioner system for several years and continue to have them provide filter replacement and check the system. Great service.”

Turlock water filter questions
Why does my water taste different than it used to?
Turlock now blends city wells with treated Tuolumne River water, and the mix changes through the year. Many homeowners notice more chlorine taste since the river water was blended in. A whole house carbon filter keeps the taste steady at every tap.
What kind of whole house filter do you install?
We offer several options, including carbon filters and backwashing systems. Your free in-home test shows which fits your home, and you get a written, no-pressure estimate.
Will a whole house filter remove nitrate?
It isn’t designed to. Whole-house anion exchange is our primary method for nitrate. Under-sink RO can also reduce it in drinking water, though less effectively.
Do I need a water softener too?
Not always. Turlock’s hardness is moderate, averaging 89 ppm. A free test shows whether a softener or salt-free conditioner is worth it for your home.
How much does a whole house filter cost?
It depends on your home’s size and what your water test shows. We start with a free in-home water test in Turlock, then give you a written, no-pressure estimate for the whole house filter your water calls for.
