Water Softener vs Saltless: Which Fits Your Home?
Both work well. The right choice depends on your household size and your goals: soft-water feel and fewer spots, or scale reduction with no salt and no brine tank.

When we compare options, both work well, and the right choice depends on household size and goals. Liquid Solutions Inc installs both water softeners and saltless conditioners across the Central Valley. Family-owned since 1996, CSLB C55 (California’s water conditioning contractor license) #811243. Softener tanks and saltless system tanks we install carry a lifetime limited tank warranty.

What a softener does well
A water softener exchanges hardness minerals so soap lathers, glasses rinse clearer, and scale stops building inside the water heater and appliances. Families who want that soft-water feel — especially on very hard city or well water — usually land here.
Most softeners only soften — they leave taste and feel untreated. Liquid Solutions softeners have filtration built in, so you get soft water plus better-tasting, cleaner-feeling water from the same system.
What a saltless conditioner does well
A saltless conditioner reduces scale buildup with no salt bags, no brine tank and no salt added to the water. It does not soften the way a softener does, so you may still see some spotting. Many homeowners simply prefer no salt.
How to choose
- Softest feel, fewest spots, very hard water - often a softener
- Soft water with better taste and feel from one system - softener (ours include filtration built in; most softeners do not)
- No salt, no brine, scale reduction - often saltless
- River Islands / some HOA rules - saltless first (rules decide). See Lathrop options
- Not sure - free in-home test. We will show both
Household size matters for sizing either system. Your free test keeps the recommendation honest.
What neither one does
A saltless conditioner is not a chlorine filter, a nitrate system or a drinking-water RO. Most softeners also stop at hardness alone — ours are different: filtration is built in for better taste and feel. For heavier whole-house taste and odor needs, see whole house filters. For drinking water, see reverse osmosis.
Questions
Which is better: softener or saltless?
Both work well. Better depends on your goals and household. We will show both at your free test.
Will saltless water feel soft?
It reduces scale; it does not create the same soft-water feel as a softener. Spotting may still appear.
Do softeners also filter the water?
Most softeners only soften. Ours have filtration built in, so you get better-tasting, cleaner-feeling water along with soft water. Saltless and softener both work well; which fits still depends on household size and goals.
Do softeners add a lot of sodium?
Softeners exchange hardness for sodium (or potassium with KCl salt). If you are on a low-sodium diet, ask us.
Can I switch later?
Sometimes. Ask us about your plumbing loop and goals.
